Special Features

This area has been made a national park because the rock formations are so special. It is also to preserve the indigenous culture of the area. Both Uluru and Kata Tjuta are very important places, even today for the aboriginal people.
What’s special about it? Uluru – Kata Tjuta national park is special because you can find amazing rock structures there that you can’t find in any other national park in Australia! Uluru is the best known natural landmark in Australia. It is 348 metres high and 9.4 km’s around the base. Most of the rock is actually underground! Kata Tjuta has 36 rocks covering an area of 20 km’s. All of the rocks are made of sandstone.

There are many different types of flora & fauna in this national park. Most of the plants are desert plants and don’t need much water. There are also many rare types of plants. The aboriginals used a lot of these plants to make tools and weapons, like spears, boomerangs and bowls. The plants were also their food and medicines. There used to be 46 species of native mammals living in the national park, now there are only 21 species of fauna. Some animals you’ll find there are: wallabies, kangaroos, emus and reptiles like pythons and lizards. There are also some introduced animals such as; house mouse, camel, fox, cat, dog and rabbit
